Literacy Circle: Read-Alouds and Book Discussion for Rising K through Fourth Graders
Provided by Marietta Morelli, Librarian

Meet through Zoom twice a week for a read-aloud and book discussion. Books will be selected to enrich students’ vocabulary and background knowledge and build a love for stories. “Listening to a story establishes fluency and expression, and motivates children to want to read independently. The richness of background knowledge typically revealed and discussed provide lessons beyond story comprehension,” (The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease) Read more: Why Read Aloud PDF

Cooking: Summer Dips for Rising Second through Fifth Graders

Join Marietta on Zoom to prepare Guacamole, Pico de gallo, Hummus and Pesto. Families will be sent a prep list of ingredients and equipment such as (utensils/blender/bowls/cutting board, etc) before each class and well in advance of that week’s session. The list of ingredients will also allow families to notify the teacher regarding individual allergies so substitutions can be made.

No stove or microwave will be required but there will be an expectation for children to chop ingredients using a knife. Many students have had experience safely using knives during cooking activities at school, but parents have the option to supervise according to their discretion.
